South Indian breakfast idli – soft idli with rice

Idli is a simple, easy and healthy breakfast from south india. We can prepare soft idli in two ways. One is with idli rice another is with idli rava.

  • 2 cups Rice Idli Rava or Regular rice
  • 1 cup Urad dal
  • 1/4 cup Thick poha
  • Salt as required
  • Water to soak the Urad dal, regular rice
  1. Wash the regular rice and soak it for 4 - 5 hours. Avoid this step, if you want to use rice idli rava.

  2. Soak the idli rice rava for 1hr. Then drain the water. Avoid this step if you use regular rice.

  3. Rinse the poha and and soak it for 4 - 5 hours.

  4. Rinse the urad dal soak it in a separate bowl for 4 - 5 hours.

  5. Reserve the soaking water from the urad dal and drain it.

  6. Grind the urad dal with 1/4 cup of reserved water for some time. And add some more water and soaked poha then grind till it gets the smooth and fuffy batter.

  7. Take this fluffy batter in a bowl.

  8. Grind the soaked rice same as urad dal. Avoid this if you want to use rice idli rava.

  9. Mix the urad dal batter with idli rice rava or rice batter. Add salt and mix well.

  10. Cover the bowl with lid and let the batter fermentation for 8-9 hours or overnight.

  11. After the fermentation process, this mixture will be doubled.

  12. Take the idli molds and apply oil.

  13. Poured the idli mixture in molds with the help of a spoon. And steam them in a pressure cooker or idli steamer.

  14. Steam it for 15 to 20min.

  15. Serve the hot idlis with coconut chutney or sambar or both.

  16. Preserve the remained idli batter in refrigerator.
